Dhaiyan Yoga Studio
ABOUT DHAIYAN
I have been studying yoga for the past 10 years and teaching for 5. My need for Yoga came out of a physical Illness that I was born with, Cystic Fibrosis. I was diagnosed with this dis-ease at 9 months old. I pretty much led a normal life, as normal as one can lead with a disease such as CF. I was in and out of the hospital from age 25 up until the time I had my Double Lung Transplant at age 37. Having only 50% lung capacity is not much fun.
Growing up I was always active. Snowboarding, working out, cycling, water skiing, playing all sports. Slowly, I was unable to do most of these activities. It was about this time that I was introduced to Yoga.
On February 2, 2001 I had a life saving Double Lung Transplant at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Read about it at www.johnsfriends.org. The rest is history.
For this reason my classes are unique. How many people do you know who've had a double lung transplant? Ok, but how many people do you know who've had a double lung transplant, teach yoga, sang lead vocals in a rock band www.airdogs.com for 3 years (while at that low lung capacity might I add) and ran a successful Software Configuration Management company?
I've been told I have been blessed. For this I am grateful, truly grateful. Through hard work, perseverance, tenacity and an attitude that I could do anything I set my mind to, I have overcome the odds. This is what I want to give back to my students. Yes you can! Anything is possible!
The reason that my Yoga classes are different from other Yoga classes is that I've been there, I've been to the brink of giving up, the brink of physical despair. I was unable to perform physical activities, like walking, having to take a shower while I was hooked up to oxygen, not being able to take my own garbage out to the curb. It was very hard to cook and clean. Activities that most people don't even think twice about doing, I had to put a lot of thought into performing.
My own personal experiences and the "I've been there, I know what it's like" speech, are the reasons why my classes are so unique. I take a personal interest in each class and every individual in those classes. I "teach" Yoga not simply guide people mindlessly through a class.
The only way to really know is to take a class. Find out for yourself. Make the call, it's your gift!
My Students are "educated" not just guided through a class. They will walk away from class with a heightened awareness of why Yoga is practiced along with a deeper understanding of the benefits and positive affects Yoga has on the body.
My classes incorporate Asana (physical postures) and Pranayama (breath control) and Meditation to achieve optimum health. Emphasis and awareness is placed on proper alignment, and use of breath. Visualization is used to expand and deepen the mind body connection.
"What is Integral Hatha Yoga – Integral Yoga is a combination of specific methods designed to develop every aspect of the individual: physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. Hatha Yoga or bodily postures (asanas), deep relaxation, breath control (pranayama), cleansing processes (kriyas) and mental concentration create a supple relaxed body, increased vitality, radiant health and help in curing illness.
Through the use of Hatha Yoga or bodily postures (asanas) one will attain a useful, peaceful, easeful body. By incorporating breath control (pranayama) while in these asanas we facilitate the removal of toxins and impurities from the body. This is achieved in a gentle manner. Swami Satchidananda".
